How to set up a tool pegboard and shadow board?

A tool pegboard keeps every tool visible and within reach right above the workbench. This guide explains hole patterns and systems, how to choose hooks and holders, the 5S method with a shadow board and safe mounting above the bench.

Which pegboard systems are available?

Tool pegboards differ mainly in their hole pattern and material. The most common are the classic round-hole panel, the square- or slotted-hole panel and heavy steel perforated panels. The pattern decides which hooks fit and how finely you can arrange the wall.

Round-hole panels often use spacings of about 25 to 40 mm, while fine systems start around 10 mm. Square-hole systems lock hooks in place so they do not lift out when you pull a tool off. Steel pegboards carry far more load than HDF or plastic panels.

Check the hole pattern in millimetres before buying. Hooks and holders are tied to a specific pattern - foreign hooks otherwise sit loosely or do not fit at all.

Which hooks and holders do I need?

The layout determines the real benefit. Every tool has a matching holder: simple hooks for pliers, double hooks for heavy items, clip holders for screwdrivers and shelves or cups for small parts and measuring tools.

  • Single hooks: for scissors, pliers and tools with a loop or grip hole.
  • Double and angled hooks: higher load for heavy tools, tilt-resistant.
  • Clip and spring holders: hold screwdrivers and bits without falling out.
  • Shelves and cups: for small parts, spray cans and measuring tools.
  • Tool clamps: hold round stock such as files or rods.
Secure hooks on round-hole panels with locking clips or retaining pins. The hook then stays in the wall when you pull the tool off quickly.

How does a 5S shadow board work?

A shadow board shows a printed or cut-out silhouette for every tool. An empty outline instantly reveals which tool is missing. This is the consistent application of the 5S method at the workplace.

5S stands for Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardise and Sustain. The shadow board mainly serves the first steps: every tool has exactly one fixed place, searching stops and missing tools are spotted at once during a shift handover.

Silhouettes made of coloured foam inlay or as stickers can be adjusted later when the tool set changes. That keeps the board permanently up to date.

How do I mount the pegboard above the bench?

Ideally the pegboard hangs so the most-used tools sit in the comfortable reach zone. As a guide, start the panel about 15 to 25 cm above the work surface and extend it to shoulder height so you reach everything standing and seated.

  • Check the substrate: concrete, masonry or stud walls need different anchors.
  • Use spacers: they create room behind the panel so hooks lock securely.
  • Spread heavy boards over several fixing points, not just the top edge.
  • Use a spirit level so hooks and tools do not slide sideways.
  • Keep sockets and lighting clear and do not cover them.
Mind the stated load rating of the panel and the mounting. Spread heavy tools across load-bearing areas rather than into a single corner.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a pegboard and a shadow board?

A pegboard is the carrier panel with a hole pattern for hooks and holders. A shadow board adds printed silhouettes so any missing item is noticed instantly.

Which hole pattern should I choose?

It depends on the tools. Fine patterns from about 10 mm allow many positions for small tools, while coarser patterns around 25 to 40 mm are sturdy for heavy hooks. The key is that hooks and panel match.

How high should I mount the pegboard above the bench?

As a guide, start the panel about 15 to 25 cm above the work surface. Frequently used tools go into the comfortable reach zone at eye to chest height, rarely used ones higher up.

Do hooks hold securely on a round-hole panel?

Generally yes, but they can come loose when you remove a tool. Locking clips or retaining pins keep the hooks reliably in the wall.
