Choosing the right KERN balance

Resolution and capacity

The key figures are maximum capacity and readability. Analytical balances resolve down to the microgram range (e.g. 0.00001 g) and suit laboratory sample weighing. For production and shipping, coarser industrial and floor scales with high capacity are the right choice.

Verification

If the weighing result is used for sale, billing or official purposes, a verified (verifiable) scale is required. Many KERN models are available optionally verified - check the accuracy class you need before ordering.

Test weights and calibration

For regular checks, OIML test weights are recommended. The class (E1, E2, F1, M1 ...) should match the balance resolution: the finer the balance, the higher the weight class required.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about KERN & SOHN

What does KERN & SOHN manufacture?

KERN & SOHN is a German manufacturer of precision weighing and measuring technology. The range includes analytical and laboratory balances, industrial and counting scales, floor scales, OIML test weights, material and force testing instruments and microscopes.

Are KERN scales verifiable for commercial use?

Many KERN scales are available optionally verified (eichfähig). A verified scale is required when the weighing result is used for sale, billing or official purposes. The accuracy class available depends on the specific model.

Which balance is suitable for the laboratory?

For analytical sample weighing, an analytical balance with very fine readability into the microgram range, around 0.00001 g, is suitable. For coarser laboratory tasks a precision balance in the milligram range is sufficient.

Which test weights match my balance?

The accuracy class of the test weight should match the resolution of the balance. KERN supplies OIML weights in classes E1 to M1 as individual weights and as weight sets; the finer the balance, the higher the weight class required.

Can I order KERN products with advice?
