Taps
Völkel threading tools
Taps cut internal threads into a pre drilled core hole, in electronics and general industry mainly metric ISO threads to DIN 13 and ISO 68-1. Selection follows the standard of the design, DIN 352 for hand tap sets, DIN 371 for machine taps with reinforced shank up to M 10 and DIN 376 for larger sizes, plus the chamfer form and the flute form: straight fluted for through holes in short chipping materials, with spiral point also for through holes, spiral fluted for blind holes. Thread forming taps do not cut, they form the thread without chips and need a larger core hole diameter. The range covers 1342 articles, mostly from Völkel in HSS-G, HSSE, HSSE-PM and with TiN coating, plus combination tap bits from Wiha and Wera.
| Chamfer form | Chamfer length | Hole type | Usual flute form |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form A | 6 to 8 threads | through hole, taper tap in hand set | straight fluted |
| Form B | 3.5 to 5 threads | through hole | spiral point |
| Form C | 2 to 3 threads | blind hole | spiral fluted, R 35 or R 39 |
| Form D and E | short chamfer | blind hole with little thread run out | spiral fluted |
| Thread forming tap | chipless forming | through and blind holes in ductile materials | no flute, larger core hole |
Typical applications: threads in housings, front panels and mounting plates in device manufacturing; rework and repair in equipment building; fixture and tool making with blind holes in quenched and tempered steel; series machining of stainless steel with HSSE-PM and TiN; on site assembly with combination tap bits that drill, tap and deburr in one operation.
