Choosing the right Leica Geosystems instrument
Red or green - the beam colour decides visibility
Many construction lasers of the brand come in two beam colours. A red beam is sufficient for interior work and subdued light. A green beam is far easier to see in daylight and over distance and pays off wherever you want to read the line or point directly on the structure.
Green models carry a G in the name, for example Lino L2G, Rugby 640G or Piper 200G.
Check protection rating and laser class
Depending on the design the instruments cover protection ratings from IP54 up to IP68 and IPX8. A low rating is enough for dry interior work. In the pipe trench, in earthworks and in permanently wet conditions choose a highly protected unit.
Laser classes range from 1 through 2 and 2M up to 3R. Brighter classes are visible further away but require the safety instructions to be observed and the operators to be briefed.
Read directly or work with a handheld receiver
Distance meters and line lasers are read directly. Rotating lasers instead work with a handheld receiver such as the Rod Eye, which signals the position of the laser plane optically and acoustically. This is what makes large working areas usable even when the beam is no longer visible to the naked eye.

Planning pipe laying and utility locating
Pipe lasers of the PIPER series are given a grade setting in percent and project the beam along the planned pipe axis onto a target plate. That lets you control the fall over the whole section.
Locating follows the transmitter and receiver principle. A signal transmitter applies a signal to the line, directly, inductively, through a signal clamp or through a sonde inside the pipe. The locator then searches for that signal at the surface. The selection criteria are the achievable locating depth and the available frequencies.

No. Leica Geosystems AG of Heerbrugg in Switzerland belongs to the Hexagon group and builds measuring technology for surveying, construction and utility locating. Leica Microsystems and Leica Camera are separate companies based in Wetzlar, Germany. All three carry the Leica name for historical reasons but are independent businesses with completely different products. This brand page lists Leica Geosystems instruments only.
Should I choose a construction laser with a red or a green beam?
A green beam is far more visible in daylight and over distance than a red one, which is why green units have the advantage outdoors and in brightly lit rooms. A red laser is sufficient for interior work in subdued light. At Leica Geosystems the green variants are marked with a G in the model name, for example Lino L2G, Rugby 640G or Piper 200G.
What is the Rod Eye handheld receiver used for with a rotating laser?
A rotating laser spins the beam into a full plane. Beyond a certain distance and in daylight that plane can no longer be seen with the naked eye. The Rod Eye handheld receiver is moved along the levelling staff or the structure and indicates optically and acoustically whether it sits above, on or below the laser plane. Only this makes large working areas on site practical to handle.
How does a PIPER pipe laser set the fall of a pipe run?
The pipe laser is set up inside the pipe or in the manhole and is given a grade setting in percent. It projects the beam along the planned pipe axis onto a target plate in the next pipe section. The pipes are then aligned so that the laser spot sits in the centre of the target, which keeps the fall correct over the whole section. Accessories such as the Alignmaster, target sets and a remote control are included with many packages.
How does cable and utility locating with DD and ULTRA work?
Locating follows the transmitter and receiver principle. A signal transmitter applies a defined signal to the line to be traced, either directly through connection clamps, inductively or through a signal clamp around the cable. For non conductive pipes a sonde is pushed into the pipe. The locator then searches for that signal at the surface and shows the route and an estimated depth. The key selection criteria are the achievable locating depth and the available frequencies.
