Choosing the right Starlight illumination
Ring light by working distance
The RL12 ring lights differ mainly in their usable working distance. Pick the model so your object sits within the stated range:
- Short distance for compact setups and higher magnification.
- Medium to long distance for more clearance above the part.
Spectrum: white, UV or IR
White light is enough for standard inspection. For fluorescence or material contrast, use UV at 365 nm or 405 nm; IR content helps with specific tasks. When working with UV, always use suitable eye and skin protection.
Ring light or cold light source
Ring lights mount at the lens and give near shadow-free illumination. Cold light sources such as the LED.70 feed light through a light guide and suit flexible, spot illumination with no heat load on the object.
Complete with a stand
The MSL stands combine incident and transmitted light with a matching ring light. Check the maximum clamping diameter so your microscope head is held securely.
Which Starlight line fits?
| Criterion | RL12 ring lights | Cold light sources LED.70 | Microscope stands MSL |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design | Ring light at the lens | Source with light guide | Stand with integrated light |
| Light type | White, UV, IR | Cold white via light guide | Incident and transmitted, ring light |
| Typical use | Inspection, machine vision | Flexible, spot illumination | Stereo microscopy in the lab |
| Working distance | Selectable by model | Guided via light guide | Defined by the stand |
| Heat load | Low | Very low at the object | Low |
| Mounting | At lens or holder | Separate housing | Ready-to-use complete system |

Frequently asked questions about Starlight
What is Starlight illumination used for?
Starlight manufactures LED illumination for microscopy and industrial machine vision. This includes ring lights, UV and IR illumination, cold light sources and microscope stands for inspection, testing and imaging.
What does UV 365 nm or 405 nm mean on the ring lights?
These values give the wavelength of the ultraviolet light. UV at 365 nm and 405 nm excites fluorescence and reveals contrast that stays hidden under white light. When using UV, suitable eye and skin protection is required.
How do the RL12 ring lights differ?
The RL12 models differ mainly in their usable working distance and LED configuration. You choose the model so your object is evenly illuminated within the stated distance range.
What is the advantage of a cold light source such as the LED.70?
The LED.70 feeds light through a light guide, separating the source from the object. This gives cold, glare-free light with no significant heat load and allows flexible, spot illumination.
Are the MSL microscope stands ready to use?
The MSL stands combine incident and transmitted light with a ring light in one setup. The key figure is the maximum clamping diameter, which determines which microscope head can be mounted. Some variants are supplied without LED modules.
