Choosing the right solder masking

Dots or tape?

For individual round areas - such as contact pads or through-holes - masking dots are the fastest solution. For elongated or irregular areas, connector rows and edges, use Kapton masking tape, which can be cut to the length you need.

The right size

Dots are available in diameters from 4 to 12 mm - choose a diameter slightly larger than the area to protect. Tapes come in widths from 6 to 28 mm:

  • narrow widths for single pins and fine contours
  • wide tapes for connectors and larger zones

Temperature and removal

The polyimide materials (Kapton) are heat-resistant up to 300 °C, making them suitable for wave and reflow processes. After soldering, dots and tapes peel off again with low residue.
