Pegboard Organization - How to Set Up a Tool Wall
A tool pegboard brings order to the workbench and keeps every tool within reach. This guide shows how to choose material, hole pitch and hook system, then mount the board securely and clearly.

Which material suits your workshop?
Pegboards come in painted sheet steel, hardboard (HDF) and plastic. The material decides load capacity, durability and whether hooks can be attached magnetically or only mechanically.
Metal pegboards often carry 50 to 75 kg per board and can also hold magnets. HDF panels are cheap and light but better suited to hand tools up to about 20 kg. Plastic panels resist moisture and are ideal for a cellar or garage.
Why does the hole pitch matter so much?
The hole pitch decides which hooks fit and how freely you can rearrange the layout. Common formats are square holes on a 10 mm or 38 mm grid, plus round holes on the classic 25.4 mm (1 inch) pegboard grid.
- Square 10 mm: fine pitch, precise positioning, used by many workshop systems.
- Square 38 mm: coarse grid for heavy hooks and bins, high load per holder.
- Round 1 inch (25.4 mm): classic pegboard, cheap hooks widely available.
- Before buying, check that hooks and board come from the same system or are proven compatible.
Plan working height, lighting and storage around the mounting spot.
Read the guideWhat hook systems are available?
Accessories turn a bare board into a workstation. Single hooks, double hooks, plier holders, tool clips and clear storage bins cover most needs.
Secure heavily used hooks with a retaining clip or locking spring so they cannot pull out when you swap tools. For heavy cordless tools, dedicated holders with a wide rest are available.
How do you mount the pegboard correctly?
For hooks to engage, the pegboard needs a gap from the wall. Spacers or a frame create the required 15 to 25 mm so the hook ends can hook freely behind the board.
- Choose plugs and screws to match the substrate (concrete, plasterboard with cavity anchors, wood).
- Level it with a spirit level and use at least four fixing points per board.
- Place heavy holders low and light tools high to lower the centre of gravity.
- Keep frequently used tools at grip height between 90 and 150 cm.
Frequently asked questions
Which hole pitch should I choose?
The 10 mm square grid suits fine, flexible layouts, the 38 mm grid suits heavy holders. More important than the size is that board and hooks come from a compatible system.
How much weight does a metal pegboard hold?
A painted steel pegboard usually holds 50 to 75 kg depending on size and fixing. Enough anchor points and fixings matched to the substrate are decisive.
Why does the pegboard need a gap from the wall?
Hook ends reach through the holes from behind. Without a 15 to 25 mm gap they cannot engage. Spacers or a frame provide that clearance.
Can I mix hooks from different brands?
Usually only to a limited extent. Metal thickness and hole shape differ between systems, so foreign hooks sit loose. It is better to stay with one system manufacturer.
