Metcal - soldering and rework systems with SmartHeat technology
Metcal is a US manufacturer of professional soldering and rework systems for electronics assembly. At the heart of the brand is SmartHeat technology: a closed-loop, self-regulating temperature control that delivers heat directly in the soldering tip and holds it steady without manual calibration.
The range spans two-channel soldering stations of the MX series, SMD soldering and rework tips, desoldering tips, Talon desoldering tweezers, handpieces and accessories. This makes soldering, rework and repair down to the finest SMD components reliable and repeatable.

Choosing the right Metcal soldering system
Station and channels
The MX series offers two-channel stations that run two handpieces - for example a soldering iron and a desoldering iron, or a Talon tweezer - in parallel. For mixed soldering and rework at the same bench, this is the most flexible base.
Tips by series and temperature
Metcal tips are coded by series (e.g. 500, 600, 700), which defines a fixed, self-regulating working temperature. Choose the series to match the thermal mass and component size:
- Lower series for small, heat-sensitive components.
- Higher series for large ground planes and lead-free joints.
Tip shape for the task
For SMD rework, shapes include tunnel for SOIC, quad for QFP and PLCC, and blade-style Talon tweezer tips. The geometry determines how well heat couples to each package.

Frequently asked questions about Metcal
What is Metcal's SmartHeat technology?
SmartHeat is a closed-loop, self-regulating temperature control. Heat is generated directly in the soldering tip and held automatically at a fixed series temperature, without any manual calibration of the station.
What is the Metcal MX series?
The MX series comprises two-channel soldering and rework stations such as the MX-5251, MX-5241 and MX-500S. They run two handpieces in parallel, for example a soldering iron, a desoldering iron or a Talon tweezer.
What do the series numbers such as 500, 600 or 700 on the tips mean?
The series indicates the fixed, self-regulating working temperature of the tip. Lower series suit small, heat-sensitive components, while higher series suit large ground planes and lead-free joints.
What are Talon tweezers used for?
The Talon desoldering tweezer uses paired tips to remove and rework two- and multi-pin SMD components. The TATC-series tweezer tips can be chosen to match the task.
Are spare tips and accessories available for Metcal?
Yes. We supply SMD soldering and rework tips, desoldering tips, Talon tweezer tips, as well as handpieces, stands and couplings. Tell us your station and task and we will name the matching parts.
