Dies cut external threads on round stock, bolts, threaded rod and pipe ends and are guided in a die holder to DIN 225 (DIN EN 22568). Selection follows the design to DIN 223 and DIN 382 and the format, besides round dies the 25x9 mm version is common, along with versions to BS 1127 and JIS B 4451. The thread profile follows DIN 13 and ISO 68-1, pipe threads follow DIN 2999 and DIN 5157. The cutting material determines tool life and material suitability: HSS and HSS-G for structural steel, HSSE with cobalt and steam treated HSSE-VAP for tough and stainless steels.
