Choosing the right magnification for your visual inspection
Magnification and dioptres
For most inspection tasks at the workbench a moderate magnification is best, because as magnification increases the field of view and working distance become smaller. For magnifiers the refractive power is stated in dioptres (dpt) - the higher the value, the stronger the magnification, but the closer you have to work to the object. Choose as much magnification as needed and as little as possible.
Form factor: hand, stand, head or microscope
- Magnifier lamps with stand or table foot hold the optics hands-free above the workpiece - ideal for soldering, assembly and inspection.
- Head and attachment magnifiers keep both hands free and suit longer fine-detail work.
- Stereomicroscopes deliver a three-dimensional image at high magnification for demanding quality control.
Lighting and colour temperature
Good illumination decides the inspection result. Integrated LED rings or ring lights illuminate the object with little shadow and glare. Neutral-white light of around 5000 to 6000 kelvin reproduces contrasts and colours realistically and tires the eyes less than warm light.
Which form factor fits your task?
| Criterion | Magnifier lamp | Head magnifier | Stereomicroscope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnification | Low to medium | Low | Medium to high |
| Field of view | Large | Large | Small |
| Hands free | Yes, via arm | Yes, on the head | Yes, on the stand |
| Lighting | LED integrated | Optional clip-on headlight | Ring light as accessory |
| Typical use | Soldering, assembly, inspection | Fine work, repair | Incoming goods, QC, lab |
| Working distance | Medium | Large | Short |

Frequently asked questions about Eschenbach
Which Eschenbach products do you offer?
We carry the technical range from Eschenbach: Vario LED magnifier lamps, illuminated stand magnifiers (scribolux), head and attachment magnifiers (labo-MED), stereomicroscopes and matching accessories such as table feet, hinged arms, ring lights and eyepieces.
What are Eschenbach magnifier lamps used for?
Magnifier lamps combine a magnifying lens with integrated LED lighting and a flexible arm. They suit soldering, assembly, fine mechanics and visual inspection at the workbench, because both hands stay free and the object is lit with little shadow and glare.
What does the dioptre value on a magnifier mean?
Dioptres (dpt) indicate the refractive power of the lens. A higher value means stronger magnification, but also a shorter distance to the object and a smaller field of view. For inspection work you usually choose as much magnification as needed and as little as possible.
When is a stereomicroscope better than a magnifier?
A stereomicroscope gives a three-dimensional image at much higher magnification and suits demanding tasks in electronics assembly, laboratory and quality control. For simple checks and larger fields of view at the workbench, a magnifier lamp or head magnifier is usually sufficient.
Are accessories such as table foot, ring light or eyepieces available?
Yes. We offer matching accessories for the instruments, including table feet and hinged arms for mounting, LED ring lights for illumination, and wide-field eyepiece pairs for stereomicroscopes, so you can set up the workstation exactly as needed.
