How do you use desoldering braid correctly?
Desoldering braid is a fine copper braid impregnated with flux that absorbs molten solder by capillary action. You place it on the joint, heat through it with the iron until the solder wicks up, then lift both away. For SMD pads and clean-up work it is far more precise than a solder pump.
Explore solderingHow does desoldering braid work?
Desoldering braid is a fine copper mesh soaked in flux. Hold it against a joint and heat it with the iron: the solder melts and capillary action draws it up into the braid. This removes solder cleanly - ideal wherever a solder pump would be too coarse.
The flux also cleans the surface and improves heat transfer. Full contact between tip, braid and joint is essential so the heat passes through quickly.
How do you desolder step by step?
Lay the braid on the joint, press the hot tip onto it and wait until the solder rises into the mesh. Lift braid and iron together as soon as the solder is absorbed, then trim off the saturated section before the next joint.
- Place braid of a suitable width on the joint.
- Press the hot tip firmly onto the braid so heat passes through.
- Wait until the molten solder wicks up silver into the mesh.
- Lift braid and iron at the same time so nothing re-freezes.
- Cut off the saturated, discoloured section and feed fresh braid.
Which braid width suits which joint?
Match the braid width to the joint: narrow braid for SMD pads and fine tracks, wide braid for ground planes and large THT pads. A braid that is too wide steals heat from the area; one that is too narrow saturates too quickly.
For frequent desoldering a temperature-controlled station pays off.

Can you reuse desoldering braid?
Only the unused part. Once a section is saturated with solder and discoloured, cut it off and continue with fresh braid.
Why is my braid not picking up solder?
Usually there is too little heat or flux. Press the tip firmly through the braid, raise the temperature briefly, or switch to fresh flux-soaked braid.
Desoldering braid or solder pump - which is better?
The braid works finer and is ideal for SMD and residual solder. The pump quickly clears large amounts from plated through-holes. The two often complement each other.
