Nitto Kohki Pneumatic Solutions

Nitto Kohki clean-room couplings are designed for semiconductor and chip manufacturing, where particulate release and contamination are critical rejection criteria. The range covers two specialised series: the Semicon SP Cupla in stainless steel SUS304 with FKM or EPDM seals, and the Semicon SCT Cupla in PTFE and FEP, which allows chemically inert media contact. Both series connect and disconnect pressure-free, preventing fluid or gas release during coupling.

Clean-room materials - SUS304 stainless steel (SP) or PTFE/FEP (SCT), designed for ISO-class clean rooms in semiconductor production
Pressure-free disconnection - Coupling and uncoupling under zero pressure prevents fluid release and particle contamination
FKM and EPDM seals - Resistant to chemically aggressive process gases and UPW (ultrapure water)
Port sizes 1-8 - Plug and socket variants available with G, NPT, and UNS threads

Series in this category compared

Maximum working pressure is the first selection criterion. It decides the series, not the size: a low pressure coupling does not become high pressure capable by choosing a larger bore.

The four shut-off types

The shut-off type decides what happens on disconnection. It is the second criterion and depends on whether the line is under pressure when it is parted and how much fluid may escape.

One-way shut-off (valve in the socket)One-way shut-off (valve in the socket)shut-off valve in socketplug without valveSocketPlugFlow direction: socket to plug
On disconnection the valve in the socket closes the supply line. The fluid left in the plug escapes.
Two-way shut-offTwo-way shut-offshut-off valve in socketshut-off valve in plugSocketPlugFlow direction: socket to plug
Both halves close on disconnection, so the line contents are retained on both sides.
Valveless, full boreValveless, full boreno valve, clear borefull boreSocketPlugFlow direction: socket to plug
No valve, therefore the lowest pressure drop. The line must be depressurised before disconnecting.
Flat face, dry breakFlat face, dry breakflat sealing faceSocketPlugFlow direction: socket to plug
Flat sealing face, so fluid loss is minimal and the parting face is easy to wipe clean.

Choosing a coupling in five steps

  1. Fix the fluid and the operating temperature, which gives the seal material.
  2. Determine the maximum working pressure, which gives the pressure class and the series.
  3. Choose the shut-off type: one-way, two-way, valveless or flat face.
  4. Fix the end connection and size: hose barb, male thread, female thread or tube fitter.
  5. Choose the body material for the fluid and the environment, then order plug and socket as a pair.
