Why does the speed range matter most?

Speed decides how cleanly and material-appropriately a rotary tool works. Good units offer stepless control from about 5,000 to 35,000 rpm, so soft materials do not melt and hard ones do not chip.

Plastic, wax and soft metals call for low speed to avoid heat. Cutting steel or engraving glass and carbide instead needs high speed and steady torque reserves under load.

True constant electronics hold the set speed even under load. Without them the speed drops when you press down and the surface turns rough.
  • Low (5,000‑10,000 rpm): plastic, wax, polishing, delicate materials.
  • Medium (10,000‑20,000 rpm): wood, aluminium, drilling, grinding.
  • High (20,000‑35,000 rpm): cutting steel, engraving glass and carbide, milling.

Which collet size do I need?

The collet grips the shank of the accessory. Only when the shank diameter matches the collet exactly does the tool run true and vibration-free. Common sizes are 2.35 mm and 3.2 mm, with 6 mm on more powerful units.

A set with several collets keeps the tool flexible. A keyless or quick-change chuck saves extra time when swapping accessories.

Which accessories suit engraving and detail work?

A rotary tool is only as versatile as its accessories. For engraving you use diamond and carbide tips, for grinding abrasive stones and flap wheels, for cutting thin cut-off wheels, and for polishing felt and cloth heads.

  • Engraving: diamond tips for glass and ceramic, carbide burrs for metal.
  • Grinding and deburring: grinding stones, sanding bands, brushes.
  • Cutting: reinforced cut-off wheels for metal and plastic.
  • Polishing: felt wheels with polishing paste for a high gloss.
  • Flexible shaft for fine work, drill stand for accurate drilling.
Check the maximum permitted speed of every accessory. Cut-off wheels and brushes have speed limits, and exceeding them can cause them to shatter. Safety glasses are mandatory.

For long sessions, weight and ergonomics also count. A slim, well-balanced handpiece is less tiring, and a flexible shaft relieves the hand during the finest engraving.

Corded or cordless?
