Setting up an ESD workstation: components and grounding

An ESD workstation is the smallest unit of the EPA. It consists of a dissipative bench mat, personnel grounding, floor and a common grounding point. This checklist walks through every component and its limit values to DIN EN 61340-5-1.

Which components does an ESD workstation need?

A complete workstation combines a dissipative work surface, personnel grounding, dissipative floor and a common ground. Each component has a defined resistance range to ground.

How do you build the workstation step by step?

Build from the grounding point outward: first the common ground, then surface, person and floor - each element in a star to the EBP.

  • Set the earth bonding point (EBP) and bond it to protective earth (PE).
  • Lay the dissipative bench mat and route it via a 1 MΩ ground cord to the EBP.
  • Choose personnel grounding: wrist strap (seated) or heel strap + floor (standing).
  • Connect a dissipative floor where people walk in the area.
  • Add an ioniser where unavoidable insulators are present.
  • Measure all resistances and record them in the test plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum equipment of an ESD workstation?

A dissipative bench mat with grounding and a personnel ground (wrist strap), both to a common grounding point at PE. For standing work add a floor and heel strap.

Must every workstation have its own grounding point?

All elements of a workstation run in a star to a common earth bonding point that is bonded to protective earth. Several workstations may share the same grounding connection.

How do I check that everything works?

Measure personnel grounding every working day, surfaces and floor periodically, and document. A maintained test plan is also the evidence.
