Compact cylinder, single-acting
Compact cylinder ISO 21287
Single-acting compact cylinders to ISO 21287 extend under pneumatic pressure and retract via an internal return spring, requiring only one air connection per cylinder. The Airtec NAE series covers bore diameters from 20 to 100 mm with stroke increments as short as 5 mm, giving designers compact overall lengths at predictable return force. Simplifying the pneumatic circuit compared to double-acting designs, these cylinders suit applications where only the extend stroke needs to be powered.
The standardised ISO 21287 interface means mounting dimensions, port threads and overall lengths are interchangeable across norm-compliant manufacturers. Variants with external thread on the piston rod (suffix -AG) allow direct connection to clevis or joint heads without additional adapters.
| Criterion | Note |
|---|---|
| Bore diameter | Determines extend force; check spring return force in datasheet |
| Stroke | NAE: 5-25 mm standard strokes; longer strokes - consider ND/NAE series |
| Piston rod | Standard or -AG (external thread) depending on attachment concept |
| Operating pressure | Typically 1.5-10 bar; spring force must reliably retract the load |
| Environment | Standard NBR seals; special versions available for aggressive media |
Typical applications: Clamping and locking functions in transfer systems, ejection movements in injection moulding and stamping machines, simple lifting and shut-off tasks in conveying equipment, and wherever a defined spring force in the de-energised state is required, such as safety clamps or brakes.
