Spring balancers
A spring balancer suspends an electric screwdriver, pneumatic tool or ionising gun above the workstation and takes the weight off the operator. The spring is set to the load: the tool stays at any height, is pulled down with little force and returns once released. Load ranges run from 0.2 kg for precision screwdrivers to 70 kg for heavy pneumatic tools. Dissipative ESD balancers are available for EPA zones, together with rails, trolleys, frames and snap hooks for mounting.

How to choose Spring balancers
What matters when choosing: properties, comparison and typical applications.
Selection by load
What counts is the weight of the tool including bit, cable or hose. It should sit in the middle of the load range so the spring can still be fine-tuned.
| Tool | Typical weight | Suitable load range |
|---|---|---|
| Precision screwdriver, ionising gun | 0.2 to 0.4 kg | 0.2 to 0.5 kg or 0.2 to 0.6 kg |
| Electric screwdriver up to about 3 Nm | 0.3 to 0.7 kg | 0.4 to 1.0 kg or 0.5 to 1.5 kg |
| Electric screwdrivers and air grinders up to about 1.5 kg | 0.8 to 1.5 kg | 1.0 to 2.0 kg or 1.0 to 3.0 kg |
| Pistol-grip and in-line screwdrivers for higher torque, belt sanders | 1.5 to 3 kg | 2.0 to 4.0 kg or 2.5 to 5.0 kg |
| Chisel hammers, needle scalers, chamfering tools | 3 to 15 kg | 4.5 to 9.0 kg or 9.0 to 15.0 kg |
| Heavy handling loads | above 15 kg | 15 to 70 kg (Nitto Kohki TW-22 to TW-70) |

Frequently asked questions
- How do I choose the load range of a balancer?
- Weigh the tool with bit, cable or hose. The weight should sit in the middle of the load range, for example a 0.7 kg screwdriver on a balancer for 0.5 to 1.5 kg.
- Do I need an ESD balancer in the EPA?
- Yes, if tool and balancer hang inside the ESD protected area. ESD balancers have a dissipative housing and are marked ESD, for example Tecna 9310ES, 9313ES and 9321ES.
- Where is the balancer attached?
- To a rail, a frame or a running rail above the bench. Trolleys make the suspension point slide sideways, the snap hook connects cable and tool.
- What does cable travel mean?
- Cable travel is the distance the tool can be pulled down, depending on the model for example 1600 mm, 2000 mm or 2.5 m.
- Are there balancers for pneumatic tools?
- Yes. The Nitto Kohki series suit air screwdrivers and grinders, and Bosch Rexroth offers a balancer with G1/4 connection for pneumatic tools from 1.2 to 2.5 kg.
