A level reads the staff only as finely as the graduation allows, and for settlement work in the tenth of a millimetre range that is far too coarse. The Leica GPM3 solves it mechanically, it is fitted onto the objective of the NA2 or NAK2 and locked in position with the knob. Turning the micrometer knob tilts the plane parallel glass plate, the line of sight moves up or down in parallel until it sits exactly on the next graduation line. The displacement itself is read on a dedicated scale, directly to 0.1 mm and estimated to 0.01 mm.
