What do types A to E in EN 795 mean?

EN 795 divides anchor devices into five classes. They differ in how they are fixed and whether the anchor is permanently installed or mobile. The right choice always depends on the substrate and the roof shape.

  • Type A: single anchor points fixed into the load-bearing substrate (concrete, steel, timber).
  • Type B: mobile, temporary anchor devices without structural fixing, such as clamp or tripod systems.
  • Type C: horizontal flexible line, meaning cable-based systems with a flexible guide rope.
  • Type D: horizontal rigid line as a permanently mounted rail.
  • Type E: deadweight anchors that hold on the surface through their own mass alone.
Note: since 2012, EN 795 types B, C and E are only covered as personal protective equipment for a single person. Permanent installations for several users additionally require CEN/TS 16415.

Which type suits which roof shape and substrate?

The key factors are whether the substrate can absorb the test force and how the surface is accessed. A flat roof often takes a type E deadweight anchor, while a trapezoidal steel deck calls for a penetrating type A fixing.

On flat roofs the edge distance of the deadweight anchor must be correct so that a fall cannot swing over the edge. Always follow the manufacturer figures for minimum distance and roof pitch.
  • Check the substrate for load capacity before installation (concrete strength, sheet thickness, timber section).
  • For several users on one line, choose a type C cable system with tested intermediate brackets.
  • Calculate the free fall clearance below the anchor: add lanyard length, absorber deployment and body height.

How is load capacity tested and certified?

Load capacity is proven by a static test force and a dynamic drop test. Under EN 795, an anchor point must withstand a static load of 12 kN in the direction of pull for at least three minutes without failing.

For structurally anchored points (type A) a static verification of the substrate by a qualified person is also required. The pull-out value of the anchors must cover the test force with a safety factor.
  • Document installation and initial test, fit an inspection tag with the date.
  • After any fall, lock out the affected device and have it inspected by a competent person.
  • Repeat the inspection at least annually, more often in aggressive environments.

What test force must an EN 795 anchor point withstand?

An anchor point must withstand a static load of 12 kN in the direction of loading for at least three minutes. Its dynamic behaviour is additionally proven in a drop test with 100 kg.

Can a single anchor point protect several people?

Type A to EN 795 is designed in principle for one person. For several simultaneous users, CEN/TS 16415 applies, which demands higher forces for each additional person.

Which type suits a flat roof without penetration?

A type E deadweight anchor holds through its own mass alone and needs no penetration of the waterproofing. Edge distance and maximum roof pitch must follow the manufacturer specification.

How often must an anchor device be inspected?

At least once a year by a competent person, more often in corrosive environments. After any fall the affected device must be locked out and inspected immediately.
