Label Adhesive: Permanent, Removable or Freezer-Grade?

The adhesive decides whether a label stays put or peels off. This guide compares permanent, residue-free removable and freezer-grade adhesives and shows how to choose by surface, temperature and dwell time.

Permanent, removable or freezer - what is the difference?

Pressure-sensitive label adhesives differ mainly in their initial tack, their final bond strength and how they behave on removal. Broadly there are three classes: permanent, residue-free removable and freezer-grade. Each class is tuned to a particular surface and temperature range.

Permanent adhesives build a high final bond within hours and can later be removed only with residue or by tearing the label. Removable adhesives hold reliably yet peel off cleanly even after months. Freezer adhesives stay flexible in the cold and bond even on damp or frosted surfaces.

Rule of thumb: permanent for durable rating plates and hazardous goods, removable for returnable containers, shelf and price marking, freezer for food and pharma logistics below 0 °C.

How do you choose by surface and temperature?

The surface determines achievable bond strength more than any other factor. Smooth, high-energy surfaces such as glass or painted metal are ideal; rough, dusty or greasy areas and low-surface-energy plastics (PE, PP) are critical.

Just as important is the application temperature: standard permanent adhesives usually need at least +10 °C to flow out. Labelling below that means the adhesive never reaches full strength and the label later lifts from the edge. Cold environments explicitly call for freezer adhesives.

Clean the surface with isopropanol before labelling and let it dry. Grease, dust and condensation are the most common cause of labels peeling off.

What do final bond strength and dwell time mean?

Pressure-sensitive adhesives reach their initial tack the moment you press the label down, but their final bond strength only after fully flowing onto the surface. Depending on adhesive and temperature this takes from a few hours to around 24 hours.

  • Apply the label with even pressure and no air bubbles.
  • Do not load, wash or freeze the item right after application.
  • Final bond strength rises with pressure, temperature and dwell time.
  • Peel removable labels slowly and at a shallow angle.
  • For critical surfaces always run a 24-hour test sample first.
A removable adhesive that stays on a surface for many months can post-cure through UV, heat and pressure and then leave residue. For truly residue-free removal the planned dwell time is decisive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a permanent label without residue?

Usually not. Permanent adhesive builds a high final bond and normally leaves glue residue or tears on removal. If you need to remove it later, choose a removable adhesive from the start.

At what temperature do I need a freezer-grade adhesive?

Standard adhesives flow out poorly below about +10 °C. When labelling chilled, damp or frosted goods below 0 °C you need a freezer-grade adhesive that can be applied down to about -40 °C.

Why does my label lift at the corners?

Usually because of too cold an application temperature, a greasy or dusty surface, or too little pressure. Clean the surface, label above 10 °C and let the bond cure for 24 hours.

Does removable adhesive also hold long term?

Yes, removable adhesives hold reliably for months. After a very long dwell time or strong heat they can post-cure and then may no longer come off completely residue-free.
