Both methods use a thermal printhead that is heated dot by dot. In direct thermal printing, a heat-sensitive coating on the label reacts directly and turns black - with no ribbon at all. In thermal transfer printing, the heat melts ink from a ribbon onto the label.
This difference drives durability and running cost. Direct thermal is simple and ribbon-free, but it fades under heat, light and abrasion. Thermal transfer creates a permanent image, but it needs a matching ribbon and a compatible label material.
How durable is each print?
For thermal transfer, durability depends mainly on the ribbon. There are three classes: wax, wax-resin and pure resin. The higher the resin content, the more resistant the print is to abrasion, chemicals and temperature.
- Wax ribbon: economical, good for paper labels in dry environments, low abrasion resistance.
- Wax-resin ribbon: more robust, suited to coated papers and light PE films, resists smudging.
- Resin ribbon: highest resistance to solvents, oil and heat, for PET, PP and PI labels.
- Direct thermal label: no ribbon needed, but sensitive to sunlight, heat and friction.
What does running each method cost?
Direct thermal saves the ribbon, removing a consumable and the changeover effort. In return, the heat-sensitive label stock costs more than plain paper, and the printhead wears faster because it makes direct contact with the abrasive label.
Thermal transfer adds the ribbon as an ongoing cost. The ratio of ribbon length to label length matters: a ribbon that matches the roll length avoids expensive waste. Over the life of a label, however, thermal transfer is still cheaper for long-term applications because reprints and complaints are eliminated.

How do I spot a direct thermal label?
Scratch the blank label with a fingernail - if a grey mark appears, it is heat-sensitive and thus suitable for direct thermal. Thermal transfer labels stay unchanged when scratched.
How long does a direct thermal print last?
Under normal conditions typically several months. Sunlight, heat above 60 degrees, friction or plasticisers will quickly grey out or fade the print.
Can a thermal transfer printer also print direct thermal?
Yes, most thermal transfer printers support both modes. You simply leave out the ribbon and switch the print mode to direct thermal. The reverse is not possible: a pure direct thermal printer has no ribbon spindle.
Which ribbon for plastic labels?
For PET, PP or polyimide labels use a resin ribbon, as it bonds firmly to plastic and resists chemicals, oil and heat. Wax ribbons smudge on films.
