Plato is a brand of ITW (Illinois Tool Works) and has specialised in the design and manufacture of soldering tips for over 50 years. Besides soldering and desoldering tips, the range includes the well-known Plato shear cutters.

Choosing the right Plato soldering tip
Choose by soldering task
The tip geometry depends on the size and heat demand of the joint:
- Fine pitch and SMD: conical MS-4120 (0.25 mm), MS-4130 (0.5 mm), MS-3110 (0.8 mm) or bevelled MS-5160 (1.2 mm).
- THT, pins and stranded wire: chisel tips MS-3150 (1.3 mm, long), MS-3200 (1.6 mm), MS-3250 (2 mm) and MS-3300 (2.4 mm).
- Large joints and ground planes: MS-3400 (3.2 x 0.8 mm) and MS-3600 (4.6 mm).
Matching your iron
The MS series fits the Weller WSP and MPR irons on WSL, WD, WS and WSD stations. The C-series C-3040-9 is designed for the FE 50M, TCP and TCPS irons.
Replace a Weller tip directly
Each MS tip corresponds to a Weller LT tip: LTA = MS-3200, LT B = MS-3300, LTC = MS-3400, LT D = MS-3600, LTK = MS-3150, LTL = MS-3250, LT H = MS-3110, LTS = MS-4130, LT1 = MS-4120, LT4 = MS-5160. The C-3040-9 replaces the Weller PTB.

Both models cut copper wire up to 1.0 mm, are 131 mm long and weigh 51 g. The Plato 175 additionally has a locking clip that holds the blades in the closed position.
