How to choose a vacuum lifter for glass and panels?

A vacuum lifter holds glass, sheet metal and coated panels using suction alone. This guide explains how to work out the number of suction cups, the load per cup and the safety factor, and why vacuum control decides how safely you handle a load.

How does a vacuum lifter work?

A vacuum lifter creates a partial vacuum between an elastic suction cup and the smooth workpiece surface. The outside atmospheric pressure presses the cup down, and this pressure difference carries the load. So what matters is not the cup itself but the sealed area and the vacuum level actually reached.

Hand-lever vacuum lifters pull the vacuum purely mechanically with a piston or a pump lever. They need no power and no compressed air and suit glass, painted sheet, composite panels and polished stone. The one condition is a smooth, sealed and clean surface.

On porous, rough or textured material (bare concrete, sawn timber, textured sheet) no cup holds reliably - air leaks in and the vacuum collapses.
  • Suitable: float glass, toughened/laminated glass, painted and coated sheet, acrylic, composite panels, polished tiles and stone.
  • Unsuitable: untreated concrete, rough quarried stone, open-pore timber, ribbed or perforated sheet.
  • Cold or wet surfaces reduce holding force - wipe cup and workpiece dry before lifting.

How many cups and what load rating?

Lifting force is the cup area times the vacuum level reached. At around -0.6 bar a 200 mm cup theoretically holds about 180 kg, but in practice this is cut sharply by the safety factor. Never plan with the theoretical maximum.

For vertical transport (the pane hangs upright) use a safety factor of 4, because shear forces pull at the cup edge. So spread the weight over several cups: a twin or triple lifter holds a large pane flatter and stops thin formats from bowing.

Rule of thumb: payload = total cup rating divided by the safety factor. Factor 2 horizontal, factor 4 vertical. Always design to the lower value.

Why does vacuum control matter so much?

A vacuum lifter slowly loses vacuum - through micro-leaks at the sealing edge or through temperature changes. Without an indicator the operator only notices when the pane starts to slip. That is why every good lifter has a vacuum control that makes the state visible.

  • Red-green indicator: a ring piston or marker shows the moment the vacuum drops below the safe level.
  • Warning whistle: some models whistle audibly on vacuum loss - ideal for overhead or back-to-wall work.
  • Re-pumping: on mechanical lifters you can rebuild the vacuum at any time before transport.
  • Before every lift, vent briefly and check the indicator instead of trusting the last cycle.
Rubber cups age. Replace cracked, hard or deformed sealing lips - a brittle cup no longer holds vacuum and is the most common cause of accidents.

On electric vacuum lifters a pump re-draws the vacuum automatically and a gauge plus audible alarm monitors it continuously. For heavy glass facades or series assembly this is mandatory; for occasional lifting a tested hand lifter with a visual indicator is enough.

Frequently asked questions

How much can a single vacuum lifter hold?

A 200 mm hand lifter safely holds around 90 kg horizontally, a 120 mm cup about 30 kg. The decisive factors are cup area, vacuum level and the safety factor of 2 (horizontal) or 4 (vertical).

Will a vacuum lifter hold on any surface?

No. The surface must be smooth, sealed and clean - glass, painted sheet, acrylic or polished stone. On porous or rough material air leaks in and the vacuum collapses.

What is the red-green indicator for?

It signals the safe vacuum level. If it shows red or the ring piston pops out, the vacuum is too low - re-pump or reseat before you lift.

One large cup or several small ones?

Several cups spread the load, keep large panes flat and give reserve if one cup loses vacuum. For thin or large-format panels twin or triple lifters are clearly better.
