The basic difference lies in the number of actively pressurised directions. A single-acting cylinder produces force in one direction only; a spring or an external load handles the return. A double-acting cylinder is pressurised on both piston sides and works actively in both directions.
Single-acting cylinders are simple to control and safe at rest, because the spring defines a fixed end position. Which designs exist for space and stroke?
Beyond the mode of action, the design decides where and how the cylinder fits. Compact and short-stroke cylinders save space, rodless cylinders allow long strokes with no protruding rod, and guided cylinders absorb side loads and stop the load from rotating.
Compact cylinders have a very short body and suit short strokes in tight fixtures. Rodless cylinders transfer force through a moving carriage or a magnetic coupling; their length roughly equals the stroke, which saves space over long travels. Guided cylinders add guide rods that take side loads and protect the piston rod from bending.

How do I choose the right cylinder?
Selection follows four questions: how long is the stroke, how much force is needed, how much space is available and must the load be guided? The answers usually point straight to the mode of action and the design.
Short strokes in tight space call for a compact cylinder, long strokes for a rodless design. If force in one direction with a safe rest position is enough, a single-acting cylinder suffices; if both directions are needed actively, double-acting is right. Where side loads occur or the load must not rotate, a guided cylinder is the safe choice. Force follows from F = p x A, pressure times piston area - with a reserve above the load.
