The table mat is where ESD protection at the workstation actually takes effect. Components, tools and the operator's wrist sit on one defined dissipative surface, so potential differences are equalised before they reach a component.

The build is two-layer. The top layer is soft and scratch-resistant so boards and housings are not damaged when set down. The lower layer is more conductive and handles the discharge through the supplied ground cord to the earthing point.
