What does an acrylic foam mounting tape do?

An acrylic foam mounting tape is a closed-cell acrylic foam coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive on both faces. The viscoelastic core forms a high-strength bond, spreads stress evenly and absorbs tolerances as well as differential thermal expansion between the two parts.

Unlike a screw, the bond loads the part across the whole area rather than at a single point. That removes drilled holes, corrosion pockets and visible fasteners. The joint also seals against moisture and damps vibration.

Bond strength builds over time: right after joining you typically have about 50 % of final strength, roughly 90 % after 24 hours and full strength after 72 hours at room temperature.

How do I choose thickness, tack and temperature?

Three parameters decide suitability: foam thickness controls tolerance take-up, initial tack controls fixing without clamps, and temperature resistance sets the service window. All three must suit substrate, gap and load.

Foam thickness follows surface quality: smooth, rigid parts manage with 0.8 to 1.1 mm, while rough, slightly curved or differently expanding partners need 1.5 to 2.0 mm or more so the foam bridges the gap reliably. High initial tack holds vertically mounted parts at once so they cannot slip.

Design the bond for shear, not peel. A continuous strip or closed frame introduces forces across the area, whereas a narrow edge starts to peel early.

Which substrates work - and what is tricky?

The surface energy of the substrate decides wetting. Metals, glass, painted sheet and many rigid plastics have high surface energy and bond very well. Low-energy plastics such as PP and PE need a primer or a specially formulated tape.

  • Good: aluminium, stainless steel, glass, powder and wet paint, ABS, PC, rigid PVC.
  • With primer: PP, PE, TPO, EPDM, powder-coated texture paints.
  • Tricky: plasticised soft PVC, oily or silicone-bearing surfaces.
  • Never untreated: greasy, damp or dusty surfaces.
Clean with a 50:50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water, degrease fully and bond only after flash-off. The ideal application pressure is around 15 N/cm².

Application and object temperature should be at least +10 to +15 °C during bonding so the adhesive flows and wets the surface. Surfaces that are too cold prevent the required initial tack; the later temperature resistance in service is not affected.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tape really replace screws?

With a correctly sized area, yes. Acrylic foam tapes reach high shear strengths and are used structurally in vehicle and facade construction. The keys are sufficient bond area, shear loading instead of peel, and clean preparation.

How thick should the foam be?

Smooth, rigid parts manage with 0.8 to 1.1 mm. For rough, curved or differently expanding parts, choose 1.5 to 2.0 mm so the foam bridges the gap reliably and relieves stress.

When is full strength reached?

Right after joining you have about 50 %, roughly 90 % after 24 hours and full bond strength after 72 hours at room temperature. Higher temperatures speed up the build-up.

Do I always need a primer?

No. On high-energy substrates such as metal, glass or ABS the tape bonds directly. For PP, PE, TPO or EPDM a primer clearly improves the joint.
