Why do ESD testers need calibration?

An ESD tester decides whether a workstation counts as safe. If a drifting instrument reads resistance too low, insulating surfaces are wrongly waved through as dissipative - and sensitive components are then handled unprotected. Calibration ensures the reading matches physical reality.

Resistance meters age through component tolerances, humidity and mechanical wear on electrodes and contacts. Field meters are sensitive to temperature, humidity and the state of their internal reference. Both classes shift slowly, without the user noticing.

IEC 61340‑5‑1 requires a documented ESD control programme with regular verification of test equipment. Without calibrated instruments the proof of compliance simply cannot be made.
  • False pass: an insulating surface is rated as dissipative.
  • False fail: intact equipment is replaced unnecessarily.

What calibration intervals apply?

The standard does not fix an interval - it demands a risk-based, documented one. In practice a 12-month calibration cycle has become established for ESD testers, backed up by short functional checks during daily use.

Shorten the interval for harsh use, high frequency or after an instrument has been dropped. A documented trend analysis of calibration values helps you justify the interval on solid grounds.

What must a calibration certificate show?

The certificate is the real value of a calibration - it records readings, deviations and traceability to national standards. A bare "calibrated" sticker with no numbers is worthless in an audit. Check the document on content, not just on its existence.

An accredited certificate under ISO/IEC 17025 proves traceability without extra evidence. A manufacturer's calibration certificate is acceptable, but it must itself state traceability and measurement uncertainty coherently.
  • Unique instrument identity (type, serial number).
  • Date of calibration and named technician or laboratory.
  • Actual values per test point with nominal value and deviation.
  • Stated measurement uncertainty and reference standards used.
  • Explicit statement of traceability to national standards.

How often must an ESD tester be calibrated?

IEC 61340‑5‑1 sets no fixed interval but requires a risk-based, documented one. In practice 12 months is common, backed up by daily or per-run interim checks.

How is calibration different from a functional check?

Calibration compares the instrument against traceable standards and documents the deviation. The daily functional check with a reference resistor or charge source only shows roughly whether the device is plausible - it does not replace calibration.

Is a manufacturer certificate enough or do I need an accredited one?

A manufacturer certificate is acceptable if it states actual values, measurement uncertainty and traceability coherently. An accredited certificate under ISO/IEC 17025 proves traceability without further evidence and is the safe choice in strict audits.

What if an instrument falls out of tolerance?

Quarantine the instrument, re-adjust or replace it, and review which assessments made since the last valid calibration could be affected. A sound ESD control programme requires exactly this back-tracking.
