NSF H1 identifies lubricants for machine parts where incidental, technically unavoidable contact with food may occur. The permitted ingredients are listed in FDA regulation 21 CFR 178.3570, and the amount present in the food must not exceed 10 ppm.
For context: H2 applies to points with no possible contact, H3 (soluble oil) protects chains and hooks against rust, and 3H covers release agents in continuous direct contact, such as on grills or conveyors. For any point near open product, H1 is the only correct choice.

Which criteria decide the right H1 lubricant?
After the approval, service temperature, base oil type, load and environment decide the choice. The base oil sets the temperature range: white oil covers the mid range, PAO extends it upward, PAG excels in gearboxes, and PFPE withstands continuous temperatures up to roughly 260 °C.
- Contact risk: how close is the lube point to open product?
- Temperature: continuous and peak temperature of the component.
- Medium: water, steam, cleaning chemistry or sugar dust in the environment.
- Load: force, speed and re-lubrication interval.
- Compatibility: elastomers, seals and lubricants already in use.
How do you verify a valid approval and document it?
The decisive marker is the NSF registration number, verifiable in the public NSF White Book. In addition, ISO 21469 certifies that formulation, manufacture and packaging of the lubricant are hygienically controlled across the whole process.
For a HACCP concept, record the registration number, category, base oil and pack size in the lubrication schedule and archive the data sheets. That keeps it demonstrable at IFS or BRCGS audits that only H1 products run at contact-near points.
