How to choose the right air hose reel for compressed air
A hose reel keeps your compressed air line tidy, protects it from wear and removes trip hazards. This guide explains automatic retraction, the right hose length and inner diameter, and how to mount the reel on a wall or ceiling.

A spring-driven hose reel winds the hose using a pre-tensioned drive spring. As you pull the hose out the spring loads up, a ratchet lock engages at the chosen length and holds the hose in place. A short tug releases the lock and the hose retracts in a controlled way.
Compressed air enters the drum through a rotating connection (swivel joint), so the hose can be wound in and out while still under pressure. The line stays sealed as the drum turns.

Which hose length and diameter do you need?
Length and inner diameter determine both reach and pressure drop. For compressed air, inner diameters of 6 to 13 mm are common; the longer the hose and the higher the air demand, the larger the bore should be so pressure at the tool does not collapse.
Check the maximum operating pressure: quality compressed-air hoses are usually rated for 15 to 20 bar, which leaves plenty of reserve above the typical 6 to 10 bar in the line. Also look at the hose material - hybrid polymer and PU stay flexible in the cold, while PVC is cheaper but stiffer.
Wall or ceiling mount - which is better?
Hose reels are usually mounted on a wall, ceiling or column. Many models have a pivoting bracket so the drum follows your work path and the hose pays out straight. Position the reel so the hose runs freely and without kinks to the workstation.
- Ceiling mount: hose hangs free, no trip hazard on the floor, ideal above assembly stations.
- Wall mount: easy to reach for maintenance, handy next to the bench.
- Pivoting bracket: aligns the drum with the pull direction and protects the hose.
- Solid substrate and proper anchors - the drum is under spring tension.
Never release the spring tension with the reel removed - the pre-loaded drive spring can discharge suddenly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and check the fixings regularly for a firm seat.

Can the hose be wound in under pressure?
Yes. The swivel joint in the drum axle seals the compressed air, so the hose can be wound in and out under working pressure. For maintenance, however, the line should be depressurised first.
What inner diameter do I need for an impact wrench?
Impact wrenches and sanders have a high air demand. Here an inner diameter of 9 to 10 mm is recommended so pressure at the tool does not collapse. For long hoses, choose 13 mm.
Why does the hose snap back when retracting?
If the hose stop is missing or the return brake is faulty, the hose whips back unchecked. Always use the supplied end stop and guide the hose by hand as it retracts.
Wall or ceiling - which is safer?
Ceiling mounting avoids trip hazards on the floor and keeps the hose free. Wall mounting is easier to service. What matters most is a kink-free, straight hose run to the workstation.
