What does DIN EN 131 cover and which class do you need?
DIN EN 131 defines requirements for the design, dimensions, strength and testing of ladders. Since the 2018 revision the standard distinguishes two use classes: Professional for commercial use and Non-Professional for private use. In a business context you almost always need the professional class.
Both classes are rated for a maximum static load of 150 kg. The difference lies in stricter durability and torsion tests plus the marking. For ladders longer than three metres a stabiliser bar (stay) is additionally required.
Leaning ladder or step ladder - which suits the job?
The type follows the task. A leaning ladder rests against a solid surface and provides access to a higher level. A step ladder stands freely on its own stiles and suits work where there is no surface to lean on.
- Leaning ladder: set-up angle of 65 to 75 degrees, at least 1 m overhang above the exit point.
- Step ladder: the spreader must be taut and the top two steps stay free.
- Combination ladder: merges both functions, ideal for changing tasks.
- Platform ladder with tray and handrail for longer, safer standing.
- Step stools and rolling steps for low reach heights in stores and offices.
For heavy or long-duration work a platform ladder is the better choice because it offers a flat standing area and a handrail. On any ladder the rule is: light work of short duration only, no drilling with heavy force.
Which marking is mandatory?
Every compliant ladder carries a permanent label. It documents conformity with DIN EN 131 and provides the details a competent person needs for the inspection.
How often must a ladder be inspected?
Work equipment must be inspected by a competent person under workplace safety regulations. The basis is a risk assessment that defines the type, scope and intervals. In practice a yearly inspection has proven effective, or more often under intensive use.
- Check stiles and rungs for cracks, deformation and loose joints.
- Inspect the non-slip ladder feet for wear and firm seating.
- Test the spreader lock, hinges and fittings for function.
- Confirm the marking and user pictograms are still legible.
- Document the result and mark passed ladders with an inspection sticker.
Also carry out a short visual check before every use. This self-check does not replace the documented recurring inspection but stops obvious damage from being overlooked.
