Which jaw shape suits which task?

The jaw shape decides how precisely and how accessibly you can grip. For electronics, long, slim jaws with a fine tip are the standard, because they reach between densely populated components and into tight enclosures.

A straight needle-nose pliers is the all-rounder for wire and components. The bent version (45° or 90°) improves the view of the gripping point and eases the wrist when working over a board. Flat-round pliers, in turn, are ideal for forming lead wires and loops.

For sensitive components and bare contacts, choose smooth jaws rather than serrated ones - serrated jaws grip more firmly but leave marks on soft wire and leads.

How important are length and return spring?

The overall length balances reach against fine control. Electronics needle-nose pliers usually range from 115 to 145 mm; shorter models offer more control, longer ones more reach into deep assemblies.

When must the pliers be ESD-safe?

As soon as you work on electrostatic discharge sensitive devices (ESDS), the pliers belong in the ESD protected area. ESD pliers have dissipative handles that lead charges in a controlled way to the grounded work surface, staying in the typical 10⁶ to 10⁹ Ω range.

The tool itself is made of hardened, often stainless tool steel. Non-magnetic stainless versions stop small parts from sticking to the jaws - a benefit with screws and ferromagnetic components. For cleanroom and soldering, heat-resistant, corrosion-proof variants make sense.
