Soldering station calibration - how to check tip temperature?

Why does the tip temperature differ from the set point?

The station does not control the tip itself but the sensor inside the heating element. Between that sensor and the working tip lies a thermal transfer that changes with oxidation, scaling and mechanical wear. As a result the actual tip temperature can differ by several degrees even though the display stays constant.

This slow shift is called drift. A fresh tip usually sits close to the set point, but after weeks of continuous use heat transfer drops and the real temperature falls. A dirty or loose cartridge contact also raises the transition resistance and the deviation.

The display and reality are two different things: only a measurement at the tip itself shows whether your process really solders at 350 °C or effectively already at 330 °C.
  • Tip oxidation and poor wetting reduce heat flow.
  • Ageing of the heating element shifts the control curve.
  • Loose or dirty cartridge contacts raise the transition resistance.
  • Factory tolerance of the internal sensor, often already ± 5 to 10 °C.

How do you check tip temperature with a meter?

For the check you use a tip thermometer with a fine type-K thermocouple or a sensor plate that touches the tip directly. Tin the tip cleanly, hold it against the sensor and read the value once it settles. Comparing that reading with the set point gives you the deviation.

Fresh tinning is a must: a dry, oxidised tip transfers heat poorly and gives a reading that is too low and unusable.
  • Have the meter and its thermocouple checked against a reference regularly.
  • Measure each tip geometry on its own, thin tips cool down faster.
  • If needed, adjust the station offset and measure again.

Which intervals and records does QA need?

How often you check depends on workload and quality demands. In series production under IPC J-STD-001 short intervals are common, often a daily or per-shift visual check plus a documented calibration monthly to twice a year. What matters is a defined tolerance band, usually ± 5 °C around the set point.

Define in advance what happens on an out-of-tolerance result: adjust the offset, swap the tip or lock the station. Without a defined action the measurement is worthless for QA.
  • Record date, station, tip type, set point, reading and deviation.
  • Note the meter used together with its own calibration status.
  • Assign a unique ID per station for traceability.
  • Keep protocols retrievable for audits.

What deviation is still acceptable?
