In electronics manufacturing the shoe decides whether the wearer charge drains in a controlled way. The three-strap MILANO ESD sandal routes it through a cork latex footbed in ESD design and a cushioning EVA outsole. BIRKENSTOCK tests every ESD model to DIN EN 61340. An ESD workplace to DIN EN 61340-5-1 requires the person, shoe and floor system to measure below 100 MOhm, and only then is a sensitive component really protected during handling.

What this model delivers

• Dissipation as a system. Footbed and outsole are both built in ESD design and the ESD protection is tested to EN 61340. The shoe covers its share of the DIN EN 61340-5-1 requirement of less than 100 MOhm for person, shoe and floor combined.
• Original cork latex footbed, anatomically shaped. It spreads body weight across the whole sole area instead of loading heel and ball. That is what counts when a shift is spent mostly standing.
• Heel strap plus two instep straps. The foot stays in the shoe on stairs and at a brisk pace across the shop floor, the clear advantage over an open sandal for walking routes.
• Regular width. The model is built on two lasts, narrow and regular. This version is the regular last, which lets a whole department be fitted properly instead of through one universal width.
• Suede leather cover sole. The open-pored surface breathes and takes up moisture, keeping the foot climate comfortable during physical work.
• Clearly defined: no toe cap. The datasheet lists no toe cap and no protection class to EN ISO 20345. The shoe belongs at workplaces where the risk assessment does not call for toe protection.

Semiconductor production and cleanroom environments, electronics assembly and repair, test and measurement benches, order picking inside EPA zones and laboratories. Wherever an EPA to DIN EN 61340-5-1 is operated and no toe or midsole protection is prescribed.

Standards and conformity

ESD protection tested to EN 61340, the ESD standard given in the supplier datasheet is DIN EN 61340. The shoe has no toe cap and is therefore not a safety shoe to EN ISO 20345, no protection class is stated. The manufacturer is BIRKENSTOCK Global Sales GmbH in Linz am Rhein, Germany.
