What does IEC 60900 mean for a pliers kit?

The standard IEC 60900 (adopted in Europe as EN 60900) sets requirements for hand tools used in live working up to 1000 V AC and 1500 V DC. Only tools that pass this test may carry the VDE mark and the rated voltage.

Every individual plier undergoes a routine test at 10000 V, even though the permitted working voltage is only 1000 V. This margin ensures the insulation stays safe even with minor damage. The handle uses a multi-layer build so a worn outer layer becomes visible at once.

The double triangle symbol on the handle indicates suitability for live working to IEC 60900. The 1000 V figure next to it is the rated voltage, not the test voltage.

Which plier types make up a basic kit?

A solid basic kit covers cutting, gripping, stripping and holding. Five to seven pliers are enough for most electrical installation and control-cabinet work. Each has a clear job so the set does not overlap.

For live working every plier in the kit must be individually tested to IEC 60900. A single uninsulated tool within the grip area cancels the protection.

What matters for quality and care?

The key factors are the finish of the cutting edges, the ergonomics of the handles and the condition of the insulation. High-quality pliers have induction-hardened edges of around 60 HRC that cut hard wire cleanly. The insulation must bond firmly to the handle body and must not peel off.

  • Before every use, check the insulation for cracks, cuts and exposed yellow warning layer.
  • Retire damaged pliers at once - patching with insulating tape is not permitted.
  • Keep edges dry and lightly oiled to prevent corrosion.
  • Never misuse pliers as a lever or hammer.
  • Store the kit dry and out of UV light so the plastic does not become brittle.
The insulation on VDE tools ages. Handles that look brittle or discoloured should be replaced, even if the plier still works mechanically.

Frequently asked questions

What does the 1000 V marking on the handle mean?

It is the rated voltage: the plier may be used for live working up to 1000 V AC. Each piece is nevertheless tested at 10000 V to provide a safety margin.

Is a VDE mark enough without IEC 60900?

For live working, testing to IEC 60900 is the decisive requirement. The VDE mark confirms independent testing to exactly this standard, so the two belong together.

How many pliers does a basic kit need?

Five to seven pliers cover most work: combination pliers, diagonal cutters, wire strippers, long-nose pliers and, as needed, water-pump or crimping pliers.

May damaged insulation be repaired?

No. Once the yellow warning layer shows or cracks appear, protection is no longer guaranteed. The plier must be replaced; a tape patch is not permitted.
