Nonwoven wipers: which material absorbs and lints the least?

Not every nonwoven wiper suits every job. This guide compares polyester, cellulose and meltblown nonwovens by absorbency, low linting and solvent resistance, showing which material performs best in the cleanroom, at the soldering bench or in the workshop.

What are nonwoven wipers made of?

Nonwoven wipers are formed from fibres that are bonded rather than woven. Depending on fibre and bonding they fall into three main groups: polyester (synthetic, robust), cellulose or cellulose-polyester blends (highly absorbent) and meltblown polypropylene (very fine fibres, low linting).

The fibre type drives the three decisive properties: how much liquid the wiper takes up, how many particles it releases and whether it resists solvents such as isopropanol (IPA) or acetone. No single material leads in all three, so a direct comparison pays off.

As a rule of thumb: cellulose absorbs the most, meltblown and textured polyester lint the least, and pure polyester is the most resistant to solvents.
  • Polyester (PES): synthetic continuous fibre, chemically resistant and tear-proof.
  • Cellulose / cellulose-PES: high absorbency, good for oils and water-based media.
  • Meltblown polypropylene: very fine fibres, low particle release, soft.

Absorbency, low linting and solvents compared

The right choice follows the task. Absorbency matters when soaking up large volumes of liquid, low linting counts on optical or electronic surfaces, and chemical resistance is key when working with IPA or acetone.

For sensitive assemblies and solder joints: wet a low-lint polyester or meltblown wiper with IPA rather than using a highly absorbent cellulose cloth that leaves fibres behind.
  • Soak up large liquid volumes: choose a cellulose blend.
  • Remove IPA, acetone or flux: prefer polyester.
  • Particle-critical surfaces: meltblown or edge-sealed polyester.

Which wiper for which workstation?

At the ESD workstation and in electronics manufacturing, low linting and solvent resistance come first, because residual fibres disturb contacts and IPA is the standard solvent. In workshop and maintenance work, absorbency dominates instead.

Check the packaging: cleanroom wipers are laundered, edge-sealed and packed low in particles. For cleanrooms the ISO classes per DIN EN ISO 14644‑1 apply, defining the permissible particle count of the environment.

Frequently asked questions

Which nonwoven wiper lints the least?

Meltblown nonwovens made of polypropylene and textured, edge-sealed polyester wipers release the fewest particles. Pure cellulose, by contrast, lints the most.

Is polyester solvent resistant?

Yes, polyester resists isopropanol, acetone and most technical solvents and does not swell. That makes it the preferred material for removing flux and greases.

Which material absorbs best?

Cellulose and cellulose-polyester blends have the highest absorbency and take up several times their own weight in water or oil. They suit larger liquid volumes.

Can I use a cellulose wiper for electronics cleaning?

Only to a limited extent. For particle-critical assemblies and optical surfaces, low-lint polyester or meltblown wipers are the better choice because they leave no fibres behind.
