A load/unload compressor has just two states: it runs at full load producing air, or it idles delivering nothing while still drawing 20 to 30 % of rated power. A variable-speed compressor with a frequency drive (VSD) adjusts motor speed steplessly and delivers exactly the amount of air the network is drawing at that moment.
This removes the wasteful idle phases and cuts the number of load cycles. System pressure stays constant within a narrow band instead of swinging between an upper and a lower switch point. A tighter pressure band also means less energy, because every extra bar of working pressure costs roughly 6 to 7 % more electricity.

The base load is the demand that is present almost all the time. It is covered most cheaply by a fixed-speed load/unload machine running at its best efficiency. The fluctuating peak load on top is ideally handled by a variable-speed compressor that fills the gap between base load and actual demand steplessly.
When does the speed drive pay off?
Over its life, electricity accounts for 70 to 75 % of a compressor's total cost, with purchase and maintenance making up the rest. A VSD typically costs 20 to 30 % more to buy but saves 15 to 35 % energy on a suitable load profile. Spread over the operating hours, the premium usually pays back within 1 to 3 years.
The calculation is simple: annual saving = installed power × operating hours × part-load share × saving rate × electricity price.
