Not every ESD workstation needs a toe cap. At test and placement benches what counts is that the wearer's charge drains off in a controlled way and that the shoe still fits after eight hours. The BS 40 is therefore built as an occupational shoe in class O1 SR to EN ISO 20347:2022, without a cap, yet declared an ESD shoe below 100 MOhm to DIN EN 61340-5-1.

What the shoe does on the shop floor

  • ESD shoe to DIN EN 61340-5-1. In the person-shoe-floor system the resistance stays below 100 MOhm, so the wearer's charge drains off in a controlled way instead of discharging into a component.
  • Occupational shoe without a toe cap to EN ISO 20347:2022, intended for workplaces with no impact risk to the forefoot.
  • SportLine upper, an air-permeable textile fabric that keeps the shoe light and moves perspiration outwards.
  • MPU REBOUND SYSTEM in the sole. It absorbs impact energy at the heel and returns it into the roll-off, which is what counts across eight hours of standing and walking.
  • clima-stream concept, which draws moisture out of the shoe interior and balances the temperature.
  • aktiv-X functional lining, moisture regulating, abrasion resistant and colourfast. It dries quickly and keeps the foot dry across a full shift.

Areas of use

Placement and testing in electronics manufacturing, laboratory and metrology, cleanroom preparation, picking in EPA zones and any workplace where the risk assessment does not call for a toe cap.

Standards and conformity

Class O1 to EN ISO 20347:2022 marks an occupational shoe without a toe cap: closed heel area, antistatic build and energy absorption in the heel. SR stands for slip resistance on ceramic with glycerine. For the ESD workplace, DIN EN 61340-5-1 is the governing standard. It measures the person-shoe-floor system, and the value has to stay below 100 MOhm. At the lower end the shoe standard caps the resistance at 0.1 MOhm so that the shoe still insulates during work up to 230 V. The antistatic range of the shoe standard itself runs from 0.1 MOhm to 1,000 MOhm.

The model is approved for orthopaedic insoles to DGUV rule 112-191, the marking inside the shoe is what counts. The EU declaration of conformity is provided by the manufacturer ATLAS-Schuhfabrik in Dortmund.
