ERSA dry cleaner made of steel wool with holder, supplied as a pack of 10. The dry sponge cleans soldering tips gently, without moistening them.

Conventional viscose sponges are dampened for cleaning. Modern soldering tips consist of several metal layers that expand at different rates when exposed to thermal shock. This can create micro-cracks on the surface that lead to increased wear - especially when working with lead-free solder, which attacks the weakened areas. Because dry cleaning causes no thermal shock, it is the gentler solution.
