What cable marking methods are there?

The four common methods differ mainly in whether they go on before or after the cable is terminated, and how permanent the print is. Heat-shrink markers slide on before the connector and are fixed with hot air, clip-on tags and wrap-around labels can be added at any time, and writable cable ties combine fastening and marking in one step.

The choice depends on cable diameter, environment (oil, UV, temperature), required service life and whether the cable is already terminated. In industrial wiring several methods often work side by side.

IEC/EN 62491 governs the systematic marking of cores and cables. It defines how designations should be structured, not which material to use.
  • Heat-shrink markers: permanent, only fit before termination.
  • Clip-on tags: on ferrules and terminals, swappable anytime.
  • Wrap-around labels: self-laminating, protecting the print.
  • Cable ties with tag: fasten and mark at the same time.

When is each solution correct for the install?

The deciding factor is timing: closed ring markers such as heat-shrink sleeves need an open cable end. Anything added later to already-plugged cables must be able to go on from the side.

For environments with oil, fuel or UV exposure, self-laminating wrap-around labels and cross-linked polyolefin heat-shrink markers are the safest choice - the print sits protected under the clear flap or inside the material.

What matters in selection and printing?

Beyond the mounting type, cable diameter and print method decide legibility and durability. Heat-shrink markers must match the diameter: a 3:1 shrink ratio covers a wide range with one size, but only sits crease-free with the correct pre-selection.

  • Check diameter before and after shrinking (2:1 or 3:1 ratio).
  • Thermal transfer print is smudge-proof and outlasts direct thermal.
  • Build the marking systematically and uniquely per EN 62491.
  • Match the marker temperature range to the application (up to 135 °C).
  • For retrofits on plugged cables, choose side-mounting types only.
Wrap-around labels have a clear tail that folds over the printed area and laminates it. That keeps the marking legible even under friction and cleaning.
