A magnifier lamp combines magnification with shadow-free light right above the joint. This guide explains how dioptres relate to magnification, what matters in LED lighting and lens quality, and how to position the lamp ergonomically.

Dioptres or magnification - what counts for soldering?

Magnifier lamps state lens strength in dioptres (dpt), and the actual magnification follows from that. The rule of thumb is: magnification = dpt / 4 + 1. So a 3-dioptre lens magnifies about 1.75x, and a 5-dioptre lens about 2.25x.

For soldering, 3 to 5 dioptres is the proven range. Higher values sound tempting but shrink the working distance and depth of field sharply, so the iron and the component no longer sit comfortably in focus at the same time.

Working distance is tied directly to the dioptre number: 3 dpt leaves around 33 cm of space, 5 dpt only about 20 cm. Choose as much magnification as needed and as little as possible so your hands can work freely.

What matters in the LED lighting?

Modern magnifier lamps use a surrounding LED ring that lights the joint with minimal shadow. Brightness, light colour and colour rendering are decisive, because only good light lets you reliably spot cold joints, solder bridges and component markings.

  • Light colour: 5000‑6500 K (neutral to daylight white) tires the eyes least and shows colours realistically.
  • Colour rendering: a colour rendering index (CRI) above 90 keeps cable colours and boards true to life.
  • Brightness: around 800‑1200 lumens give a high-contrast image without glare.
  • Dimming: continuously adjustable light prevents reflections on shiny components.
  • Flicker-free: high-frequency drivers protect the eyes during long soldering sessions.
Look for glare-free LEDs with a diffuser or matte ring. Point-source, undiffused LEDs create hard reflections on tinned surfaces and obscure the view of the joint.

An often overlooked point is service life: good LED rings reach 30,000 to 50,000 hours and are practically maintenance-free. Unlike old fluorescent tubes there is no tube to replace, and full brightness is available the instant you switch on.

How do you recognise good lens quality?

The lens decides whether the image is distortion-free and sharp to the edges. High-quality magnifier lamps use ground crown glass or optically corrected plastic lenses that minimise colour fringing and pincushion distortion at the rim.

A large lens diameter from 125 mm keeps both hands and the component in view. Small lenses force constant repositioning and tire the eyes and neck.

Keep the glass lens free of flux haze and spatter - a coated lens kills contrast. Clean it with a soft microfibre cloth and mild cleaner, never with abrasive paper towels.

How do you position the magnifier lamp ergonomically?

Even the best optics help little if the setup strains your neck and back. A sturdy spring arm holds the lamp in any position without sagging and lets you move it precisely with one hand.

  • Spring-balanced joint: holds the set position permanently and does not drift.
  • Reach: an arm of 90‑100 cm covers the whole work surface.
  • Mounting: table clamp for flexible relocation, base or wall bracket for fixed stations.
  • Line of sight: lens slightly tilted in front of you so head and back stay upright.
  • ESD version: dissipative housing and arm for the electronics workbench.
Position the lamp so the joint sits centred under the lens and solder fumes are extracted to the side, not drawn through your field of view. That keeps both image and air clear.
