What are the three UPS topologies?

The standard IEC 62040‑3 defines three topologies: offline (Voltage and Frequency Dependent, VFD), line-interactive (Voltage Independent, VI) and online double-conversion (Voltage and Frequency Independent, VFI). They differ in how far the load is decoupled from mains disturbances.

In an offline UPS the load runs directly from the mains during normal operation and only switches to the battery on failure. The line-interactive UPS adds an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) that corrects over- and under-voltage without draining the battery. In an online double-conversion UPS the energy is permanently converted from AC to DC and back, so the load is never directly connected to the mains.

Only the online UPS (VFI) delivers a true 0 ms transfer time, because the inverter feeds the load continuously. Offline and line-interactive designs typically need 2‑10 ms to transfer to battery.

How do the topologies differ in detail?

Transfer time, output waveform, efficiency and scope of protection are the four decisive criteria. The table below sets the three designs side by side.

  • Offline UPS: inexpensive, high efficiency, but no voltage regulation during normal operation.
  • Line-interactive: corrects mains fluctuations via AVR without discharging the battery - ideal where the grid is unstable.
  • Online double-conversion: fully decouples the load, filters frequency and voltage disturbances and delivers a clean sine wave.
  • Only VFI protects against all nine mains disturbances defined in IEC 62040‑2 (including frequency deviation and harmonics).

Which UPS suits which load?

The choice depends on how sensitive the load is and on the mains quality at the site. A line-interactive UPS is often enough for single PCs and network devices, while servers, medical equipment and industrial controls call for online double-conversion.

Rule of thumb: the more sensitive the electronics and the poorer the mains quality, the more the online double-conversion design pays off. With a stable grid and non-critical loads a line-interactive UPS saves both purchase and energy costs.

Also mind the sizing: rated power is stated in volt-amperes (VA) and watts (W). Calculate the real active power of your equipment with roughly 20‑30 % headroom so the UPS also covers inrush currents and later expansions.

Frequently asked questions

What does the code VFI-SS-111 mean?

The three-part code per IEC 62040‑3 describes an online UPS (VFI), a sinusoidal output in both normal and battery mode (SS) and the three best possible values for dynamic behaviour (111). It is the highest protection class.

Why does an online UPS have a 0 ms transfer time?

Because the inverter feeds the load permanently. When the mains fails there is no transfer; the battery simply keeps supplying DC to the same inverter without interruption.

Is a line-interactive UPS suitable for servers?

For smaller servers with robust power supplies yes, since the AVR corrects voltage fluctuations. For critical systems with high availability requirements the online double-conversion design is the safe choice.

Does an online double-conversion UPS use more energy?

Yes, the permanent double conversion means efficiency of about 92‑96 %, below that of an offline UPS. Modern units with an ECO mode significantly cut the losses during normal operation.
