When air is compressed, the water vapour it contains condenses as soon as the compressed air cools down. Receivers, filters, dryers and pipework collect a mixture of water, oil and dirt that has to be removed in a controlled way.
If the condensate stays in the system, it causes corrosion, damages valves and cylinders and leads to failures in the application. A condensate drain removes the liquid automatically without wasting valuable compressed air.

Float, electronic or timer-controlled?
There are three common designs. They differ mainly in how they trigger the discharge and how much compressed air is lost in the process.
The float-operated drain works purely mechanically: as the condensate level rises, a float lifts the valve. This is robust and needs no power, but reacts sensitively to dirt and oil.
The electronic level-sensed drain measures the fill level capacitively and only opens the valve when the condensate reaches the outlet. As a result almost no compressed air escapes and wear is reduced.
What matters when choosing a drain?
The key factors are condensate volume, working pressure, level of contamination and the cost of lost compressed air. Small, clean systems often manage with a float drain, while large networks benefit from level sensing.

Which condensate drain saves the most compressed air?
The electronic level-sensed drain, because it only opens the valve when condensate is actually present. This means almost no air is lost, unlike the timer-controlled type.
When is a float-operated drain enough?
For smaller systems with little oil and low contamination. It works without power and is inexpensive, but should be cleaned regularly because the float can stick.
Why is the timer-controlled drain often uneconomical?
Because it opens at fixed intervals and blows off air even when no condensate is present. Over a year this loss adds up to noticeable energy costs.
Up to what pressure do condensate drains work?
