Which types of knee protection does EN 14404 define?

EN 14404 is the European standard for knee protection during kneeling work. It distinguishes four types by how the pad is attached, plus two performance levels for protection against penetration by sharp objects.

Type 1 are independent knee pads secured to the leg with straps. Type 2 are foam or gel inserts slid into pockets of the work trousers. Type 3 rest loosely on the floor or are worn on the body without being fixed. Type 4 are knee protectors built into a frame or accessory with additional functions.

Level 0 protects on even ground without sharp objects. Level 1 withstands a penetration test with a defined pin at 100 N of force and is intended for surfaces with gravel, nails or grit.

How do I choose the right knee pad?

The decisive factors are the surface, the duration of kneeling and the type of movement. Hard, uneven ground with sharp debris calls for Level 1 and a hard outer shell, while a smooth tiled floor is often served by a soft gel pad.

  • Hard outer shell (PE, PP): spreads point loads, good for shell construction and outdoor work.
  • Soft gel or foam padding: high seating comfort on smooth floors, ideal for interior fit-out.
  • Non-slip surface: prevents sliding on tiles and coated floors.
  • Curved shape: allows rolling and lateral movement without tipping.
  • Waterproof material: important for wet and outdoor work.
Before buying, check that the knee pads work with your trousers. Type 2 inserts only fit trousers that have the matching knee pad pockets.

What matters for fit and comfort?

A knee pad only protects if it stays in the right place. If the padding slips, the kneecap is exposed again. Wide, elastic straps with a non-slip inner side and an ergonomically curved shape keep the protection where it belongs.

On Type 1 models the straps should leave the back of the knee free to avoid pressure points and constricted blood vessels. An upper strap that is too tight becomes uncomfortable over long shifts. Two separate straps distribute the hold better than a single one.
