Anti-slip mats for cargo securing - do they really help?

How does an anti-slip mat cut the number of lashings?

In top-over lashing the load is held by the friction against the loading bed. The higher the friction coefficient µ, the greater the holding force from the same pre-tension - and the fewer lashing straps are needed on paper. An anti-slip mat raises µ from roughly 0.2 to 0.3 (wood on dry steel) up to around 0.6.

Under VDI 2700 Part 2 the friction coefficient feeds directly into the securing-force calculation. If µ doubles from 0.3 to 0.6, the usable friction force roughly doubles too, so the number of required top-over lashings drops sharply - often by 30 to 50 percent.

Always calculate with the certified sliding friction coefficient µ from the manufacturer's test certificate, not the higher static value. Only the dynamic figure is reliable during acceleration and braking.

Which thickness and material grade is right?

The key factors are thickness, material grade and the certified friction coefficient. Mats that are too thin or low grade press through and lose their effect, while quality rubber mats made of virgin or recycled rubber hold the µ value over time.

  • Thin mats (3 mm): for light cartons and small parts on smooth surfaces.
  • Medium thickness (6‑8 mm): standard for pallets and machine parts.
  • Thick mats (10 mm and up): for high point loads and rough loading beds.
  • Recycled rubber is tough and low cost, virgin rubber gives more constant µ values.
  • Check oil, cold and UV resistance if the mat is used outdoors.
Ask for a test certificate per VDI 2700 / EN 12195‑1 stating the sliding friction coefficient. Only then can the mat be credited in the securing calculation.

How are anti-slip mats used correctly?

The mat must sit fully under the load, not just at the edges. Both contact surfaces - loading bed and load base - should be clean, dry and free of loose dirt, because dust and oil pull the friction coefficient back down.

  • Place strips or cut pieces under every load-bearing contact face of the pallet.
  • Choose a mat area at least as large as the load footprint.
  • After each use check for cracks, hardening and oil films.
  • Clean soiled mats with water, never with solvents.
An anti-slip mat does not replace lashings, it complements them. Positive fit and top-over lashing remain mandatory - the mat only reduces the calculated number of lashings needed.
