The sound absorption class per DIN EN ISO 11654 groups the weighted absorption coefficient αw into classes A to E. αw ranges from 0 (fully reflecting) to 1 (fully absorbing); the higher the value, the more sound energy the screen swallows instead of reflecting it back.
Class A means αw 0.90 to 1.00 and therefore the best absorption. For noticeable noise reduction at the workplace, choose at least Class C (αw from 0.60), ideally Class A or B. The value is measured in a reverberation room per DIN EN ISO 354.
Which height and how much mobility?
Height decides whether the screen only damps desk noise or also interrupts the sound path between standing people. For visual privacy while seated about 120 cm is enough; to acoustically separate standing workstations 160 to 180 cm is advisable.
- Desk-top screen (40‑65 cm): damps phone calls and keyboard noise right at the desk.
- Mid-height screen (120‑140 cm): visual privacy and absorption for seated work.
- Full-height partition (160‑180 cm): acoustic and visual separation of whole zones.
- Castors with locking brake for flexible layouts, feet for fixed positions.
Which core and which cover?
Absorbing screens consist of a porous core, usually polyester fleece or mineral wool, with an acoustically open textile cover. The core converts sound energy into friction heat, so the fabric must stay air-permeable.
- Textile cover in Trevira CS or similar: flame-retardant per EN 13501.
- Optional pinboard function as an acoustic and organisation surface.
- Do not seal the open cover with film or lacquer, or αw drops.

What is the difference between absorption and insulation?
Absorption swallows sound at the surface and reduces reverberation in the room. Insulation blocks transmission through a component. Screens work mainly by absorption, lowering the level in the open space.
Which absorption class do I need in an open-plan office?
For noticeable calm choose Class A or B, meaning αw from 0.80. Class C is a sensible minimum. Double-sided lining matters so the screen works in both directions.
How high should a desk partition be?
For visual privacy and absorption between seated people 120 to 140 cm is common. To acoustically separate standing people you need 160 to 180 cm.
Are mobile screens as effective as fixed ones?
The absorption coefficient depends on the panel, not the castors. Mobile screens with the same αw perform acoustically the same and add flexible layout options.
